During my added sugar detox (more information HERE) I was having cravings for all sorts of cuisines… Chinese being one of them.

When you have cravings, it’s important not to fight them, but rather honor them. If you say no to yourself over and over again, it will take a toll on your mental health fighting over what to eat and what not to eat, and could also lead to a binge where you cave and eat uncontrollably.

My motto? REPLACE, DON’T ERASE!

Sure, Chinese takeout doesn’t serve as the most nutritious meal, but why not recreate it to not only satisfy your cravings, but still stay on track with your diet and health?

If you’re not too keen on beef feel free to replace it with tofu or chicken!

Ingredients:

  • 1lb. sirloin steak (flank steak works too!) (can swap this out for tofu)

  • 2 bags stir fry frozen vegetables

  • 1/2 cup coconut aminos

  • 1 tbsp tapioca flour, arrowroot starch, or cornstarch

  • salt and pepper (optional- the coconut aminos provide enough sodium and flavor!)

  • Green onions, chopped (optional)

Directions:

  1. Slice the steak into 1/4 inch thick strips

  2. Season the steak with salt and pepper (optional- keep in mind that the coconut aminos have plenty of sodium and flavor)

  3. In a small bowl whisk together tapioca flour and coconut aminos

  4. Heat a large sauté pan over medium heat and let it get hot. Add slices of beef, without overcrowding, and brown on each side (30 seconds per side). Place the beef slices into a large bowl and repeat with remaining beef (I did this in 2 batches)

  5. Using the same pan (with juice from the steak), add the frozen stir fry vegetables and cook fully. Remove the vegetables from the pan and set aside.

  6. Place the steak back in the pan and add the coconut amino mixture. Allow the sauce to come to a simmer and thicken and give the beef a stir to coat completely. You may have to do this in batches too, depending on the size of your pan. At this point feel free to toss in the vegetables or keep them on the side for serving

  7. Serve over cauliflower rice and top with green onions for the ultimate paleo meal!
